We specialize in Solano County grown wool, but I have some other favorites in the shop. My new favorite non-Solano County yarn is U.S. grown and processed Nature Spun from Brown Sheep Company. That is available in the shop at the farm, but it’s too hard to keep up with on-line listings since I am using the yarn here for my own weaving. I have Ashford kits listed here.
June 2026: I sold out of Jacob wool yarn and this year’s clip is at the mill. The Solano County Timm Ranch yarn is listed here. I hope to have naturally dyed yarns available soon.
TR25 Sport Weight Yarn
TR25 Sport Weight Yarn
Exclusive! Locally grown wool yarn from the Timm Ranch in Solano County, California. The sheep are a “ranch blend” of Rambouillet - Targhee - Polypay. Samples from a dozen fleeces this year measured an average of 23.3 microns. The fiber is super clean and free of VM. The 2025 Timm Ranch yarn is a beautiful creamy white 2-ply sport weight yarn. This small-farm yarn is handled with care at every step: raising the animals, choosing the fleeces, carding and combing the wool, and spinning the yarn. It works beautifully in weaving, knitting, and crochet, resulting in soft yet sturdy projects.
On the Timm’s shearing day Farm Club friends and I sort and skirt fleeces. This spring I sent 280 pounds of wool to Mountain Meadow Mill in Wyoming for scouring, carding, and spinning and got the yarn back in July.
Yarn is available in skeins and a limited number of cones. Yarn was spun at approximately 1421 yds/lb. The wool was scoured before processing, but the coned yarn has not been washed after spinning. Washing allows the yarn to bloom. When you use coned yarn you need to allow for the changes that happen to the yarn after washing the finished project. The photos show coned yarn at 19 wpi (wraps/inch) before washing and 13 wpi after washing. Skeined yarn is not under tension and measures 16 wpi before washing and 13 wpi after. The skeined yarn for sale has been washed.
I sett this yarn at 8 or 10 epi for most weaving projects. Knitting friends recommend using US size 5-8 (3.75-5mm) knitting needles, and G-I (4.25-5.5mm) crochet hooks, depending on the project.
