We specialize in Solano County grown wool, but I have some other favorites in the shop. My new favorite non-Solano County yarn is U.S. grown and processed Nature Spun from Brown Sheep Company. That is available in the shop at the farm, but it’s too hard to keep up with on-line listings since I am using the yarn here for my own weaving. I have Ashford kits listed here.
June 2026: I sold out of Jacob wool yarn and this year’s clip is at the mill. The Solano County Timm Ranch yarn is listed here. I hope to have naturally dyed yarns available soon.
Core-Spun Jacob Yarn
Core-Spun Jacob Yarn
Core-spun yarn is made by wrapping carded fiber around a strong yarn, resulting in a super-thick novelty yarn. Most commercially available core-spun yarn uses a cotton core but mine is 100% Jacob wool. I separate the coarser britch wool from the rest of the fleece before delivering it to nearby Valley Oak Wool Mill. Some of the fiber is spun into a two ply yarn that is used as the core and the rest is wrapped to create this exciting bulky yarn. The resulting yarn is varying shades of gray because it includes white, black, and gray fibers from the spotted fleeces.
Core-spun yarn is great for rug weaving, but there are plenty of other creative uses for this yarn. A little goes a long way as an accent in a fiber project.
Photos show 20 yard and 40 yard lengths of yarn. A 3" x 3" paper is included in some photos to show the size of the yarn.
Purchase in 10 yard increments.
