TR22-M Sport Weight Yarn

from $30.00

Exclusive! Locally grown wool yarn from the Timm Ranch in Solano County, California. Our 2022 Timm Ranch yarn is a beautiful creamy white 2-ply sport weight yarn. The fiber is super clean and free of VM. Testing of samples from nine of the fleeces showed an average of 20.4 microns. In 2022 I selected 260 pounds of the finest wool on the Timm’s shearing day. I skirted fleeces and sent the wool to two different mills for scouring, carding, and spinning. This product listing is the wool that was processed at Mendocino Wool & Fiber in Ukiah, California.

Yarn is available on cones and in skeins. Yarn was spun at approximately 1600 yds/lb. The wool was scoured before processing, but the coned yarn has not been washed after spinning. Washing allows the yarn to bloom. When you use coned yarn you need to allow for the changes that happen to the yarn after washing the finished project. The photos show coned yarn at 20 wpi (wraps/inch) and 14 wpi (in a 1/2” space) after washing. Skeined yarn is not under tension and measures 14 wpi. The skeined yarn for sale has been washed.

I sett this yarn at 8 or 10 epi for most weaving projects. Knitting friends say that #5 needles are about right. The last photo shows samples sett at 10 and 12 epi. Gray weft is Jacob. Blue weft is Ashford DK.
