This is the prime wool from our 2021 shearing, sorted into three colors, and spun into 2-ply DK weight yarn. I sort the coarser britch wool away from the bulk of the fleece. Then I sort the remaining fiber into white, black, and gray. The gray fiber includes parts of the white and black that can't easily be separated so there are fibers of both colors in the strands of gray yarn. I took the fiber to two different local mills. The fiber for this yarn was scoured, carded, and spun at Mendocino Wool and Fiber in Ukiah, CA.
JW21-M: Skeins are 4 ounces with the yardage varying by color:
White 275 yards
Gray 251 yards
Black 285 yards
Light gray britch 280 yards

Jacob sheep are a rare breed with unique spotted fleeces and 2 or 4 horns! Our flock grazes irrigated pasture 3/4 of the year and is fed locally grown alfalfa during the winter. We use intensive grazing management to promote the health of the pasture and the sheep, and we implement low stress handling technques when working with the sheep (many of whom are pets).
Jacob wool is a medium grade and when the britch wool is sorted the bulk of the fleece is soft enough for most sweaters, hat, mittens, scarves, and blankets. Britch wool is a good choice for practical items like pillows, table runners, rugs, bags, and even blankets or outwear.
