I can provide entertaining and educational presentations on a variety of topics, structured to interest your group. Most presentations include a PowerPoint slide show. I always provide things to look at and touch. Each of these programs takes about an hour including Q & A. I can make it shorter if necessary and can easily fill more time by taking more questions and more discussion of things that I bring to show. Inquiries about other topics of interest are welcome. I have listed virtual options for most of these topics.
Guild Speaker Fee: $300 plus gas and housing, if overnight is necessary. Rate for virtual programs via Zoom is $200. To discuss dates and program choices contact me. Most of the classes I teach can be adapted to off-site workshops for guilds or other groups. The workshop charge is $500/day plus mileage (IRS rate) and housing if I stay overnight.
2-Day Workshop: Weave a V-Shawl (and learn double weave)
2-Day Workshop: Weave a V-Shawl (and learn double weave)
Create a fabulous one of a kind shawl that stays on the shoulders! Use double weave and a unique method of weaving a fold to weave this shawl. Learn to plan future shawls, using stripes, plaids, and various weave structures. You will complete your shawl in class and go home with a plan (and maybe a warp) for your next shawl.
When I teach in-person at my farm, part of the experience that newer weavers appreciate is having advice and supervision when winding a warp and using back-to-front warping (recommended) when dressing the loom. Some of the class time is, of course, spent threading the loom and getting ready to weave. I have found it helpful to hold a 1 to 1-1/2 hour Zoom meeting sometime in the two weeks prior to class. That way people can come with a better idea about the design and be ready to choose yarn with only a little bit of preliminary discussion. This helps them complete the project within the two days. I provide the yarn for the shawls and looms.
See below for more detailed info about holding this workshop off-site.
I have been asked about teaching to people who come with a loom already warped and ready to weave. That is possible now that I include a Zoom meeting described above. The planning of this project is a big part of the overall class. It is important that yarn used is suitable for a double weave project and that the warp is wound according to my instructions. If this is of interest we would need a conversation before planning it.
Things to consider when holding this as a workshop that includes warping:
Is there a place to mount warping frames? I have used grid wall set up in sets of three or four panels to mount two warping frames.
When looms are provided (or brought by participants) each loom should come with lease sticks (with clamps or other way to hold them in place), raddle, threading and sley hooks, and two shuttles and bobbins.
Loom benches are recommended or make sure chair height is adjustable or cushions are provided for other chairs.
Bobbin winder should be provided.
Experience: Basic weaving experience. Should have wound and woven at least one warp.
Materials fee: Cost of yarn if purchased from me ($60-70, depending on yarn choice).
Supplies in addition to looms and warping equipment: Scissors, 2 boat shuttles and bobbins, fabric cutting board (cardboard is OK).
