American Maid™ Cotton Yarn - 3/2

from $9.00

Sustainably grown, colorful cotton yarn straight from American cotton fields to you!  This American made yarn is available in its natural color with no dye required!  The light shades are blends of the green or brown fiber with natural white. Available in:  Dark Brown, Light Brown, Dark Green, Light Green, Natural White (the color of “white” cotton before it is bleached) and Bleached White.

All of these yarns are made from cotton grown here in the American west, and spun in the US.  The cotton never leaves the US during it’s whole journey from the fields, through the multi-step milling process to the Lunatic Fringe warehouse.  Lunatic Fringe purchases the cotton lint from farmers who use modern sustainable farming practices, and work with mills in the southeastern US to make the yarn. The brown and green cotton is grown in New Mexico and Texas. The white cotton is Organically Grown from the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative. All of these yarns are made from cotton grown here in the American west, and spun in the US.  The cotton never leaves the US during it’s whole journey from the fields, through the multi-step milling process to the warehouse.

Photos: The woven samples in the photo of 5 samples are sett (from left to right) at 10 epi, 12 epi, 15 epi, and 15 epi with 8/2 weft. The single piece of weaving is a close up of a baby blanket woven with 3/2 cotton. sett at 12 epi. The brown and green colored cotton yarns become darker when washed, especially in alkaline water.  Just add baking soda to the warm wash water and watch the color deepen.  The first wash water is often pretty dirty because when you wash it, it is the yarn’s first bath!  You are washing off the dirt from the fields as well as any oils or dirt from the processing.

These yarns are 100% American Made yarns.  Cotton lint is purchased from the cotton growers and the fiber is tended all the way through its processing into yarn.  Each year Michelle of Lunatic Fringe makes purchasing decisions, choosing fiber to make these yarns as sustainable as she can.

I have the yarns in 3/2 and 8/2 and can order 10/2 and cabled 4-ply yarn . ( I have Sampler Kits of all of these.) All are available on 4 ounce, 8 ounce, and 1 lb cones. Use 3/2 for wonderful bath towels, snuggly blankets or delicious placemats. Weave baby wraps, hand towels, and lightweight blankets with 8/2 and 10/2. The cabled 4-ply is a worsted weight yarn and knits up beautifully on size 7-9 needles with 16-20 gauge in stockinette.

Cabled 4-ply - 1050 yards/pound
3/2 - 1260 yards/pound
8/2 - 3360 yards/pound
